Garmin eTrex rubber itself The GPS devices from Garmin eTrex series of navigation devices are excellent for outdoor use. Unfortunately, many of which have a defect in the bonding of rubber coating, which surrounds the device. Especially at warmer temperatures, the adhesive is soft and swells out from under the gum. Sooner or later then dissolves the rubber from the device.
leakage is the eTrex fortunately still not as the actual seal is under the rubber and remains fixed to the chassis.
Garmin is at least during the warranty period and probably also very accommodating with their customers and to replace a defective unit with a new one. A permanent solution is not, because the new devices can again have the same problem.
In my eTrex Vista HCx it was so that the warranty had expired just two months when I had fixed the problem ellen. Also, I had imported the equipment from the U.S. and no proper proof of purchase more.
After some searching in relevant forums, I came across probably the best solution.
First, the rubber is removed. Among them we come to a sticky mass, become weak adhesive, which has a honey-like consistency. The adhesive is removed mechanically. These are the best textile towels with which to rub down the adhesive. It worked on the device itself and then the rubber band until barely remains stuck to it. Then you clean the eTrex and the rubber with the aid of benzene or alcohol. Since I had neither on hand, I have applied alternately aftershave and window cleaners - and this worked quite well.
stuck then you double-sided Tape on the GPS. This work is a little tricky because you have to cut the tape accordingly. It is important that the tape is glued to the fullest possible Gerätenut and still be kept at the same time the holes on the micro-probes. The film is allowed to initially on the tape, it is enough if one pops up on a few corners, so you can grip it better later and remove it. I had to stick it into several sections because I could not cut the tape exactly.
Finally, you glue on the rubber. First, it closes the USB port with the rubber and then stick it on top of the device. Then both sides of the range comes with the Controls on the series. Here have to work carefully to get the rubber buttons to lie exactly on the micro-probes. The rest of the gum was with me a bit expanded, so it was easy to stick to first base. Here one must pay attention to the recess for the hand strap. At the very end you glue the two long sides. My rubber was indeed very far here, but could be easily stick without hitting waves. Rubber you can just pull in not only the length but also squeeze.
This method has several advantages:
- Man, the device must not send, there is no waiting period.
- The costs are very low.
- This is a permanent solution.
- If the work should not succeed equally, this is no problem because the tape can be easily removed.
If anyone should have the same problem with his eTrex - only fresh and courage to work - it's worth it!

The disadvantage of this volume is that it is very thick.

The tape is so thick that you have the buttons then press down very deep. The solution was

Because the tape is so thick the rubber is now a millimeter to decline. This took me only a little disturbing - but it is just a visual restriction and actually makes out of nothing.
